Yuletide 2017 - Dear Author Letter
Oct. 2nd, 2017 07:47 pmDear Yuletide Author,
Hello! I'm so happy you're here. And I'm here. We're both here together. This is going to be great!
I am blahblahwhy on AO3.

Let's get started!
Fandom: In a Mass Knife Fight to the Death Between Every American President, Who Would Win and Why? (blog post)
Characters: Any
Remember when we were so excited for 2016 to be over? Welcome to the 2016 that never ends, everyone. I invite you to get out all your politics-related stress by writing one massive knife fight. In the blog post, the author has set up a few rules: they’re in a space based on the Roman Colosseum, FDR has a badass motor wheelchair, etc. The author also details how they believe it went down. I consider these to be suggestions or assumptions, or prompts in their own right. If you want to bring other assumptions to bear, that’s cool.
You can take those rules and write any part of this scenario: the initial scene with a bunch of people, or the final standoff when only a few Presidents are left. You can write up an alliance scene mid-battle, or you can write up a single death. Five things fic is great!
There are four characters nominated for this fandom, and feel free to write any/all/none of them. You won't ruin Yuletide if you leave someone out, and you certainly won't ruin Yuletide if you put other characters (presidents or otherwise) in. For how to ruin Yuletide, please see the first bullet below.
A few notes:
Fandom: Rush Hour (1998)
Characters: James Carter (Rush Hour); Yan Naing Lee (Rush Hour)
This was the first Jackie Chan movie I ever saw, and it holds a special place in my heart. I love this odd couple who are both so devoted to their job, and eventually, each other (sort of. You know what I mean). I definitely ship these two, but if you don't, that's okay!
Prompts:
A note about my racism DNW: I recently rewatched the movie, and some of the humor has aged quite a bit, including the racial humor! Dialogue similar to canon is fine, but I'd prefer more of a focus on cultural differences and less on Lee's pronunciation and "black people are like this; Chinese people are like this" jokes. You can also leave out racial humor entirely and have them needle each other for their Odd Couple-esqe differences rather than racial stereotypes played for laughs.
Fandom: Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Characters: Gunpei Ikari (Kong: Skull Island); Hank Marlow (Kong: Skull Island)
I loved this movie, and I'm very glad it's getting a sequel. But do you know what movie I want? The prequel (or... in-quel?) featuring Gunpei and Marlow. They were together on the island for so long, obviously with a rivalry that eventually ended in a very close friendship. Again, I ship these two, but it's more than okay if you don't!
That's it from me! I hope, above all, that you have fun writing a story. Best of luck!

A few notes:
- In re: living presidents: DO. NOT. WRITE. SOMETHING. THAT. WILL. CONCERN. THE SECRET SERVICE! If you get arrested because you wrote an overly specific death of a sitting U.S. president, that would be realllllll unfortunate, and probably ruin Yuletide. So. Maybe Trump lives (note: I didn't say wins), maybe he dies offscreen, but consider it an official DNW to describe a Trump in so much detail that the USSS decides to figure out this whole "fandom" thing. Same with both Clintons, both Bushes, and Obama. Reagan? He’s already dead IRL and unlikely to attract Secret Service or FBI ire. Go nuts.
- The author of the post believes Andrew Jackson makes it to the end. I say: Feel free to kill Andrew Jackson with extreme prejudice. (Hey, do some period-appropriate Indian Chiefs find themselves in the arena? Do they super kill Andrew Jackson? Does Harriet Tubman do it herself?)
- As you might assume from the point above, poetic justice is a plus.
- First Ladies? Go for it. (I just found this Internet Archive post of the analogous knife fight between Presidents' wives. You can certainly have them in the arena as well!)
- Does this get weirdly psychosexual? Okay, sure. Go for it. Consider my bloodplay DNW null and void for this prompt.
- Do you want to build the world around why this would be happening? Are there spectators? Is it a Hunger Games-esque situation with commentators? A Saw situation?
- Do you want to just write the formation of an awesome Presidential alliance with absolutely no onscreen death? Maybe they can Lead their way out of this situation with minimal body count? That's okay too!

Prompts:
- What if Carter and Lee get together? For the first time! Maybe after a particularly tiring case? What's it like? What happens?
- Hurt/comfort? Especially if they just had one of those "oops I accidentally punched you and now your nose is almost broken" scenes?
- Oh no, for this case Carter and Lee need to pretend to be *married!* Surely nothing will come of it and no feelings will be revealed!
- Casefic! What is the next case they need to team up on? (I realize a sequel to this movie already exists, but I give you ultimate freedom to ignore or not as you see fit.)
- It's a heist! Do they need to get something back from the bad guys? Does it involve Carter playing some sort of a role?
- What if one of them invites the other to a family dinner?
A note about my racism DNW: I recently rewatched the movie, and some of the humor has aged quite a bit, including the racial humor! - We don't actually see them declare a truce. How did that happen? How did they learn to communicate with each other?
- Kong is also in the tagset, and you can feel free to write about an encounter between Kong and Gunpei and Marlow.
- What if Gunpei and Marlow get together? For the first time! (I am a fan of simple tastes.)
- How did they figure out the horrors of the island?
- What were their first interactions with the Tagatu tribe like? Did the tribe take them to be brothers? Lovers? Friends? Dangerous outsiders?
- Take me through what it was like building that boat.
- One of my favorite parts of the movie was the music. Did they teach each other their favorite music? Did one of them teach the other how to dance?
That's it from me! I hope, above all, that you have fun writing a story. Best of luck!
